Microsoft announced that Windows XP, Vista or 7 users will be able to upgrade to the new Windows 8 Pro for $39.99. The promotion will be available from the time Windows 8 ships this fall until Jan. 31, 2013.
Users will be able to purchase the upgrade directly from the Windows.com website, with the help of an Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant. The Assistant will also check to make sure the PC is ready for the new Windows.
A packaged DVD upgrade option will also be available in local stores, but it will cost $69.99. Pricing for new, non-upgrade licenses of the operating system has not been announced yet.
